TAILORED COACHING BUILT AROUND THE DRIVER

Driver coaching is not just about improving technique behind the wheel.

It’s about understanding how performance is built. That includes driving skill, but also mindset, decision-making, preparation and the ability to deliver consistently under pressure.

Drawing on his experience as a racing driver, ARDS Instructor, Motorsport UK Level 2 Coach and FIA Disabled Driver Mentor, combined with decades of experience in senior leadership in the high-pressure world of IT, Julian works with drivers to develop both the technical and mental aspects of performance.

Every programme is tailored to the individual, whether the focus is building foundations, refining technique or preparing for competitive racing.

The objective is not just to drive faster, but to understand how to perform more consistently.

AREAS OF COACHING

Driver coaching focuses on the key areas that influence performance on track, combining technical development with a deeper understanding of how and why performance improves.

This includes both what happens in the car and how the driver approaches performance away from it.

Areas of focus typically include:

  • Driving line and circuit positioning

  • Braking technique and brake release

  • Throttle control and traction management

  • Weight transfer and vehicle balance

  • Cornering technique and racecraft

  • Consistency and lap time repeatability

Where appropriate, sessions may also involve video analysis, simulator work or data comparison to help identify opportunities for improvement.

Understanding why a car behaves the way it does is a critical part of becoming a better driver. Coaching sessions therefore combine practical feedback with technical explanation so drivers can develop both instinct and understanding.

DEVELOPING THE COMPLETE DRIVER

Performance in motorsport is not determined by driving technique alone.

The ability to perform consistently comes from a combination of technical skill, mental resilience, preparation and focus. Drivers must be able to manage pressure, process information quickly and make decisions in real time.

Coaching therefore goes beyond the car itself. It may include areas such as mindset, confidence, race preparation, focus and overall approach to performance.

Julian’s experience competing in endurance racing, alongside overcoming a life-changing spinal injury, provides a perspective grounded in real-world performance rather than theory.

Progress often requires drivers to challenge existing habits, reassess their approach and rebuild elements of their driving. This isn’t always comfortable, but it is where meaningful improvement is made.

COACHING PATHWAYS

Every programme is tailored to the individual, but coaching typically supports drivers at one of three stages in their development.

For drivers new to track driving or motorsport, coaching focuses on building strong foundations.

Sessions may cover areas such as:

Vision and learning to look further ahead
Basic braking and throttle techniques
Understanding cornering and racing lines

NOVICE RACERS

Drivers progressing into competitive racing often require support preparing for the demands of race weekends.

Coaching may include:

Preparation for race events
Developing qualifying pace
Driving in traffic and racecraft
Wet weather driving techniques
Understanding grip, balance and weight transfer

Sessions may involve simulator coaching, remote analysis or trackside support during race meetings.

EXPERIENCED RACERS

For more experienced drivers, coaching often focuses on refinement and consistency.

Areas of focus may include:

Improving endurance racing performance
Consistency across multiple laps
Qualifying performance
Managing race traffic and race strategy
Developing longer-term performance plans

These programmes are tailored around the driver’s objectives and level of competition.
